The size at which they are, they are not doing a good job of managing mobile devices. Until now, I have been using Facebook on laptop and my Android Phone. The application on the Gingerbread has been an average app – push notifications not working when they claimed it should be working with their release 1.5.
Recently, the application does not work very well on Firefox. The notifications would continue to load and the alerts for notifications would not go away. There have been similar bugs especially around updates on Firefox.
Now, when I moved to Tablets – I realized that Facebook does not have any official application for either iPad or Honeycomb. For Honeycomb I was able to use v1.5 because I had that installed on my phone and it got installed by itself. But, when they released v1.6 my tablet does not finds it in the market.
Facebook is a billion dollar company and they need to do a better job of being one. They should look at Google for one.
This all started when I was asked to buy an iPad as a gift. I was not even thinking if buying a tablet until that happened. But once it happened it was happening faster that I could think. So, now I have almost decided to get a tablet for myself and the race is between two tablets – Apple’s iPad vs. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I have not decided yet, but I hope by the time I am done with this post, I will be done. There will be one test that will remain pending and that is the battery test. I have almost tested the iPad2 but Samsung Galaxy is pending that test and I will update the post later when I have the results.
Before, I start the evaluation I provide a list of parameters on which I am going to evaluate the tablets and alongside I have ranking/weights for each of the parameters to help me arrive at a weighted score in the end. If you would like a PDF here it is – iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Gmail is the only mail I use besides my office email on mobile devices. And the integration has to be pretty sleek so that I can make best use of the email
There has to be a chat client on the tablet so that I do not have to use my computer for chatting and I am going to look for GTalk and Yahoo only
I am going to use tablet to read a lot of articles and possible share it with the world on Twitter, Facebook and WordPress. Browsing experience has to be fast and performant
Facebook, Twitter and blog should be easily manageable
I kept this out of Social Media because this is more to do with just FB and Twitter. After I find an article, I would want to be able to share it with my friends via various mechanism and this could mean an article, an image or a video
Should be able to play music easily based on the various MP3 songs I already have. Rating for this is low for me because I am not going to play music on the device and don’t care how it is
Should be able to play movies/podcasts and other video formats easily available. This is a feature that I am going to use to get myself updated
Should be able to play games well and all sorts of – board or racing. Not too important for me
Overall usability like design, input, output and easy to hold and comfort are important.
Should be good. Don’t want to wait for apps to open and do things and I wait for ever
