This all started when I was asked to buy an iPad as a gift. I was not even thinking if buying a tablet until that happened. But once it happened it was happening faster that I could think. So, now I have almost decided to get a tablet for myself and the race is between two tablets – Apple’s iPad vs. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I have not decided yet, but I hope by the time I am done with this post, I will be done. There will be one test that will remain pending and that is the battery test. I have almost tested the iPad2 but Samsung Galaxy is pending that test and I will update the post later when I have the results.

Before, I start the evaluation I provide a list of parameters on which I am going to evaluate the tablets and alongside I have ranking/weights for each of the parameters to help me arrive at a weighted score in the end. If you would like a PDF here it is – iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Parameters

Parameter Description Weight
Gmail Integration Gmail is the only mail I use besides my office email on mobile devices. And the integration has to be pretty sleek so that I can make best use of the email 5
Chat Client There has to be a chat client on the tablet so that I do not have to use my computer for chatting and I am going to look for GTalk and Yahoo only 5
Browsing I am going to use tablet to read a lot of articles and possible share it with the world on Twitter, Facebook and WordPress. Browsing experience has to be fast and performant

5

Social Integration Facebook, Twitter and blog should be easily manageable

4

Sharing I kept this out of Social Media because this is more to do with just FB and Twitter. After I find an article, I would want to be able to share it with my friends via various mechanism and this could mean an article, an image or a video

4

Music Should be able to play music easily based on the various MP3 songs I already have. Rating for this is low for me because I am not going to play music on the device and don’t care how it is

2

Video Should be able to play movies/podcasts and other video formats easily available. This is a feature that I am going to use to get myself updated

4

Games Should be able to play games well and all sorts of – board or racing. Not too important for me

2

Usability Overall usability like design, input, output and easy to hold and comfort are important.

5

Performance Should be good. Don’t want to wait for apps to open and do things and I wait for ever

Details of Analysis

Parameter iPad Galaxy Tab
GMail Integration Primary mail integration is with its native client and the integration is fairly basic however consistent with other mail clients. It does not have any Starred or Important integrations. Also, it loads all the folders and kind of cutters the view.Notifications are pull and you got to wait for a maximum of 15 minutes to pull the data. This also eats up powerThere are other clients but they are built on top of web pages and are sluggish.Score: 5 Built on Android its Gmail integration is just excellent. Has all the features and push notifications is simply excellent. You receive email as soon as you get it. Multiple clients can be configured easily. Also, once you configure the various email addresses, you automatically get Calendar and Contacts on the device and never have to worry about backing them up because they are all getting backed up on Gmail servers.Score: 10
Chat Clients There is not native chat client integration. However, the app store has a couple of clients that provide apps for chat clients easilt. IM+ is one of them which is very easy to use.Video clients are also available seperatrly.  iPad does not have a client for Skype but you can use Skype app for iPhone on iPad and it works fine. I did not test the video but voice chat is great.Score: 8 GTalk is in built and comes with Voice and Video capability which is simply great. Unlike iPad you don’t need to get any additional app.Skype has an application for Android and it works great.Score: 10
Browsing Apple has its Safari on this tablet. The browsing experience is smooth and quick – a big boost compared to iPad1. However, there are 2 things that are missing – tabbed browsing and Flash player. It takes time to navigate between tabs and also Flash sites just don’t play.Score: 6 Google has its Chrome on this tablet and it is very good. Has tabbed experience and also has flash player as supported by Android. Navigating through any site is easy and good.Score: 10
Social Integration iPas has a rocking application – Flipboard that makes the Social Integration awesome. I have never seen anything like that I don’t think I ever will. Nothing can beat that. Apart from that there are several easily available clients to integrate with various Social Media sites.Score: 10 Android has various application for Facebook and Twitter like Sesemic, TweetDeck and some official applications too. They all work very well. Some of those provide interfaces and integrations for both FB and Twitter in single application. They do the work and perform very well.I am not going to give Android 10 on this because they just suck when compared to iPad’s Flipboard. If flipboard was to bring this all for Android then this tab can have a 10.Score: 7
Sharing iPad has sharing based on what the applications have to offer and it is not consistent. Applications like flipboard has nice ways of sharing but for remaining things like web pages, you tube, articles you have to rely on copy-paste and and navigate to other application approach. It takes time and user experience is not very smooth.Score: 6 Android has APIs that allow all applications to share stuff across applications. If I want to share an article on FB or Twitter, I can hit share and it will ask me which application to share with and I can simply choose any application including email, FB, Twitter, WordPress or any application that is listening. This saves me from copy and paste. The only place where some sharing is missing is the Browser and that is a bummer because there I have to copy and paste links.Score: 8
Music iPad has integration with iTunes and that’s how it gets it music and plays in an iPAd application. It is easy and works very well.Score: 10 Android has an inbuilt Music application and plays songs very well if copied into the right folder. There is an application – DoubleTwist that performs for Android just the way iTunes for iPad.Score: 8
Video In built Video Player is very good. However it will only play the Mp4 format and any AVO format has to be converted first.Score: 8 In built Video Player is very good.Score: 10
Games Has all sorts of games and some good racing games like NFS. They play very well.Score: 10 Has all sorts of games. The concentration of Board games is much more than racing games.Score: 7
Usability Home Screens are good and have the capability of arranging the application in folders. Spotlight search is powerful and will search for everything. Typing is good and works very well. I chatted for almost 20 minutes and hardly missed a keystroke.Score: 7 Android has a fixed 5 screens and a separate tab to hold all applications. Cant create folders, but can search for applications. They have made is easier to remove applications by dragging them out.Typing is very good with the Android Keyboard. The Samsung keyboard is not that good. However, they have Swiftkey that just is the best. Also, this tablet has Voice input that helps you in not typing anything. I sued it for chat for 10 minutes and I saved 60% of my keystrokes. As long as sentences were small it was all very well. Also, has GPS so can be used for certain applications even without GPRS/3G and come back and upload data back for later analysisScore: 10
Performance It is sleek, works very well. Applications work fine. However one time, the iPad seemed to have hung on me when browsing multiple tabs in browser.Video playback for 75 minutes used up 17% of the battery charge.

Was able to use the tablet for browsing, chatting for about 8 hours with 10% of charge remaining.

Standby for 12 hours drained the battery by 10%.

It took 3 hours to charge the battery from 0 to 80%.

Can’t power off so save battery.

Overall, iPad has a slightly better battery backup and charges up faster
